Scientific Name:
Myotis brandti
Description:
The ears are small and pointed and the nose is also small on this species. They are covered in a dark brown shaggy fur.
Size:
Up to 5cm in length with a 21-24cm wingspan and weighs up to 9.5 grams.
Preferred habitats:
Woodland in areas close to water.
Diet:
Moths, midges and spiders.
Lifespan:
Up to 40 years.

Breeding

Mating happens in the autumn and females give birth to a single pup the following summer, in July.

 

Where do they live in the Forest?

They live in the woodland, often in areas close to water.

 

Natural predators

Birds of prey.

 

Spotting tips

Keep on eye out just after sunset from April until October in the woodland near a source of water.

 

Not to be confused with

Whiskered Bat. These two were consider to be of the same species until 1970s, however Brandt’s are slightly larger in size.

 

Conservation status

Protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. They are also a European Protected Species through the European Habitats Directive.
